Types of ALPR Cameras

Last updated: July 29, 2026 · Originally published in August 2017.

At Innova Systems Group we offer a vehicle and pedestrian access control system built on a functional technology pairing: software and hardware. On one hand, our automatic license plate recognition solution, SIRAM; on the other, our range of license plate reader cameras (LPR/ALPR), available in 8 models to fit any mobility, parking, access control, or retail project.

This guide has been reviewed and expanded to reflect the current model range, include practical selection criteria, and answer the most frequently asked questions.

What is an LPR/ALPR camera and how does it work?

An LPR camera (License Plate Recognition), also called ALPR (Automatic License Plate Recognition), is a specialized camera that captures the image of a vehicle’s license plate and, through optical character recognition (OCR) software, extracts the plate’s text in real time.

The complete system combines three elements: the camera (hardware, with optics and lighting specifically designed to read plates in motion, at night, or in adverse weather conditions), the recognition software (which processes the image and converts it into text), and the integration with a database or management platform (which decides what to do with that plate: open a barrier, log an entry, trigger an alarm, etc.).

SIRAM: Innova’s license plate recognition software

SIRAM is Innova Systems Group’s automatic license plate recognition solution. It works alongside our LPR cameras as a hardware + software pairing: the camera captures the image and SIRAM processes it to identify the plate with high accuracy, even in low-light conditions, rain, or at high vehicle speed.
